Cyclists, joggers, runners and pedestrians can use a dedicated pathway inside the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) complex starting September 12, 2010. The 3.5 km Green Lane that stretches from Roxas Boulevard to Macapagal Boulevard will be launched on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 6:00am at the CCP Liwasang Ullalim with a 7K Fun Bike-Run led by celebrity cyclists, free bike clinics and tune-ups, a bike exhibit and the installation of bicycle racks in selected areas of the CCP. Selected routes within the CCP complex will also be closed to vehicular traffic on the following Saturdays and Sundays from 4am to 8am and 4pm to 7pm.

The Green Lane is part of CCP’s “Luntiang Lungsod, Luntiang Sining” (Green City, Green Arts) campaign conceived with its partners Haribon Foundation, Winner Foundation, Department of Tourism, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Dragon Boat Federation, Manila Broadcasting Corporation, GMA-7 Network, Net 25 Feed your Mind, Tanggol Kalikasan, Harbour Square, and the Firefly Brigade. Retired Army sergeant threatens to do a Mendoza -
A retired Army sergeant is threatening to copy what dismissed Senior Police Inspector Rolando Mendoza did last week if the government does not give him part of his benefits, the Senate Blue Ribbon Oversight Office Management (BROOM) Office said Thursday.
In a letter to the Department of National Defense (DND) dated September 2, BROOM director general Rodolfo Noel Quimbo said a certain retired TSgt. Charmie T. Palencia has been calling their office to demand that the Philippine Army include in his benefits his broken service from Feb. 24, 1988 to Aug. 14, 1994.

Hi.
ANG SARAP!!
Alexis Tioseco & Nika Bohinc: Babang Luksa -
words by Yvette Tan || Photo from unomagazine
Remember, remember, the first of September.
Exactly one year ago on this day, two lives, young, in love, still in the middle of making a difference, were snuffed out, taken away abruptly, without warning, leaving a scar in the worldspace they were meant to occupy.
Alexis Tioseco, film critic and founder and editor-in-chief of Criticine, an online journal devoted to the intelligent discussion of Southeast Asian cinema, and his girlfriend Nika Bohinc, also an established film journalist, were gunned down in Tioseco’s house. He was 28. She was 30.
A year later, that scar is still open, ragged, raw, unhealing.

Citizen safe.
A network of friends encouraging each other to stay safe in the cities. SMS at least 3 people the license plate and name of the cab you get into, keep emergency numbers on speed dial if possible. Check on each other when you part after a gathering or a party. SMS each other if you’re home safe. Don’t let anyone you don’t know so well into your home. Always let someone else know where you are or who you’re with. Parents, mentors, friends or siblings. Anyone. As much as possible refrain from ‘secret meet ups’ with people none of your friends know. If you meet someone new - always introduce him or her to family or other friends or classmates. This is not paranoia, this is smart. It is about you and people you care about.
Do not give out your personal information online or when on the phone in public. Watch out for each other. Form neighborhood buddy groups. Be more vigilant. Know the number and location of the nearest police or fire department. Anything. Better to err on the side of caution. Adopt safe habits. Remind each other. Please. Every chance - remind each other - be alert. Don’t doze off in a cab or a train or a bus or a jeep. Stay awake. Look alert.
When I asked inmates in jail, the ones tried for kidnapping and robbery - they say they always prefer attacking people who look inattentive, tired, distracted or someone with a lot of bags and things in their two hands. Interestingly enough, one of the inmates said he never held up anybody who had an umbrella. (Yes, an umbrella!)
Basta, listo dapat at lista! Walk and stride like you’re in charge. It deters them a bit, at the very least.
Hindi ito O.A. Importante ito.
Go where you are safe and stay where you are safe. And keep each other safe. No stupid risks. Safety first.
Safety FIRST.
CITIZEN SAFE: A campaign for urban safety formed in September 2009 after Alexis and Nika were murdered in their Times Street home. This campaign is in their memory. Email us for more suggestions on safety tips. radio@rockedphilippines.org
