Pinay flubs National Anthem in Australia

MANILA - The Philippine National Anthem was messed up once again, this time by a Pinoy woman who sang it during a basketball event in Sydney, Australia.

“The Basketball Kings: PBA Legends Down Under 2009” featured a game between the Philippine All-Star team and Australian-Hoopdreamz Great White Sharks. It was held last Saturday at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.

Former Philippine Basketball Association players who participated in the event include Jerry Codiñera, Ronnie Magsanoc and Jun Limpot.

Before the game, the national anthems of the Philippines and Australia were sung. A group of five young men sang “Advance Australia Fair” before the Philippine National Anthem was performed.

According to a video posted on YouTube.com, the Pinoy woman did not even finish singing the “Lupang Hinirang.”

In the line, “Sa manlulupig, ‘Di ka pasisiil,” she sang “magsisiil” instead of “pasisiil.”

While in “Sa dagat at bundok, sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,” she crooned “mo’y” instead of “mong.”

After the line, “Sa dagat at bundok, sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,” the woman followed it up with “Ang dilag ng watawat mo’y tagumpay naninananana. Sorry.”

The crowd booed for a moment and then clapped to encourage the singer who apologized to them. “Sorry. I’m so sorry, okay?”

“I’m not true Pinoy, I know that. But I just had three days to plan this song,” she explained. “Okay can I try once more?”

“And admit it,” she told the people who were booing her, “You don’t know it (the song) as well.”

Chants of “Iiyak, iiyak” (She will cry, she will cry) from some audience members could be heard in the video.

Prior to this blunder, the most recent issue regarding the national anthem performance involved Concert King Martin Nievera.

He drew criticism from the National Historical Institute (NHI) and the provincial board of Cebu for his upbeat rendition of the national anthem before the May 2 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton.

The NHI has also reprimanded Christian Bautista, Jennifer Bautista and Charice who for their wrong rendition of “Lupang Hinirang.”
